Know My Heart

Poem Commentary

Relationships...who really does have a good handle on them. I know that there is ONE, that when it is good, it is really good. I have not been so in love over the past 20 years, like I have been with my God, my Father, my Holy Spirit, or Jesus Christ...my Savior. Sure, there have been lonely times, but those are the times when I have gone off on my own and attempted to tackle life by myself. There is a hope that I have...and that is...that someday I might glimpse, if only for a moment, a love so precious as that which I have with God, in a human to human relationship. This poem only attempts to explain this.

Know My Heart

Spoke with a friend today,
her mind seemed a world away,
tried to make a connection,
while she was deep in reflection.

She made a choice, a bad decision,
no change of mind or revision,
her words, void of love said, "no,"
cutting the line, letting him go.

Many hopes, dreams, and prayers they share,
their talk hovered around being a pair,
her time grew short, she said, "good-bye,"
she told him, "you're a wonderful guy."

Two balloons rise high in the air,
one over here, the other over there,
drifting, ascending, higher and higher,
God's holy face, his strong desire.

I like this poem; but at the end... its like you had to rush the ending. Did you get in a rush ? I must not have grasped the ending. A balloon floats over there and over here.... ummmm ?

The ending of this poem was as sad as I could get, without taking the poem in an entirely different direction. The focus is supposed to be on God, not on the couple in the poem. Their lives were not joined, except their belief in God...and that is the best part.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
