What I've Been Taught

Poem Commentary

This is more of a blog rather than a true poem.

What I've Been Taught

So I used to think I was pretty smart...yep...really did. Hard to believe at this point in life. Now I think I'm not so smart, but maybe a little wiser. Wisdom TRUMPS smart any day, BTW. In my humble, not-so-smart opinion.

My children have taught me wisdom.

My husband has taught me forgiveness.

My grandchildren have taught me that heritage is important.

My work has taught me that it's not what matters most in life.

My bank account has taught me that I needed to pay more attention in Math class.

My car(s) have taught me humility.

My pets have taught me to love myself, even when I feel unworthy of love.

My house has taught me to be satisfied with the simple things in life.

My dreams have taught me to believe...then disbelieve...then to believe all over again.

My hair has taught me to take risks.

My body has taught me more about gravity than I ever wanted to know.

My face has taught me that a smile can change someone else's day.

My legs have taught me that daily use is required.

My back has taught me to give great massages.

My brain has taught me that memories do fade - even the bad ones.

My prayers have taught me patience.

My patience has taught me to relax.

My life has taught me that change is the only thing you can truly count on and it's much better if you accept it, rather than recoil from it.

My writing has taught me about my life - I highly recommend writing.

You ARE a writer, and you're evolving each day, and this one makes me stop and think about what lessons in life we learn along the way. Thanks.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
