A Cowboy’s Prayer

Poem Commentary

This is my version of a poem under the caption of cowboy poetry.

A Cowboy’s Prayer

Each night as I settle in

 head resting on my saddle

I look upward at the stars on high

and wonder. I wonder if he’s look'n down

and sees my old bones a lay’n here.

Just in case he’s watch’n I have this little say’n

Goes something like this.

Bless my old horse Bess and my dog Rex too

Forgive me for chew’n snuff and drink’n that devil whiskey brew

Keep the herd safe from the coyotes and wolves in the night

Watch over my Sara at the ranch til morning’s first light

If you’re not too busy I could use a new pair of boots

and a pistol that don’t jam ev’r darn time that it shoots

Look out for Grandpa Zed he’s get’n up in his years

He can’t see fer noth’n and he’s deaf in both ears

Keep me safe on the trail til I reach Dodge City

Cause to die out here would be a dogon pity

Amen

...'and bless my direction as I ride through life, so as to always return to the love of my wife.' A heartfelt prayer, 'specially if the whiskey goes by the wayside, like the worn out boots. Great story that put me on the saddle, under the stars with an ache in my heart for those most precious of things in life! Thanks for sharing

lol This is great! I really enjoyed the role you assume in this poem of simple requests...I can almost smell the campfire and hear the wind through the trees!

Nicely written with down home sentiments with a touch of humor. Picturesque and down-to-earth. Well penned.

Thanks for dropping by.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
