    Food For Thought

    Holiday Thoughts

My calendar tells me it’s that time of year

When thoughts turn to giving and other forms of good cheer

The daily news is not pretty and the economies a mess

Many people are hurting and in financial distress

For those of us lucky enough to be warm and cozy

It’s not easy to celebrate as if everything were rosy

Some say those less fortunate are just lazy and don’t want to work

But in my opinion that’s nonsense, it’s not a job that they shirk

For if the jobs just aren’t there what should be their final course

Move overseas to the countries where the jobs have been outsourced?

The answers aren’t simple as I would never imply

We need cooperation in Congress not an eye for an eye

But alas it seems that consensus is far out of reach

Because political party loyalty is all that they preach

So I guess the jobs are lost forever as the rich rake in more cash

And the politicians provide them more tax breaks while social security they slash

But fear not good citizens all may not really be lost

We still have our smiles and should preserve them at any cost

For its holiday time; not the time to openly misbehave

We still live in the land of the free and the home of the brave

Here’s hoping the New Year may provide a change in direction

If not for God’s sake cast your vote accordingly at the next general election.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Truer words could not be spoken! What I really dig about this poem is that it isnt a typical holiday write- but 'realistically' aware of our situation, holidays aside.- Another great write- from a strong poetically politial voice!-Maddi

Great write. I live in Michigan, as you well know, and it is a nightmare, just a mess for everyone. Good poem.

The political Poet - and nicely done Sir Charles. And if teeth are clenched, we can still smile.

Charlie, I pray and hope it gets better too. I am incensed with the political greed and pilfering from the middle class. Retirees deserve much more inthe ay of income and affordable health care. ty for your frank and informative poem. ginga

Thank you and best wishes for the holidays.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
