Poem Commentary

My friend Avotcja (pronounced A-VAH'-CHA) is coming up on another of those infernal birthdays. I'm not sure how old she is, but rumor has it that she is older than dirt and still going strong! This piece is a birthday tribute for her. At first I was intimidated at the thought of rhyming Avotcja in a poem, but it turned out to be pretty easy... Written on the ferry this morning, This is only a first draft. I'll print it up on some nice parchment and frame it as a birthday present.

Avotcja

They say you stand on principle,

That the system never bought cha.

Through protests, wars and civil strife

You spoke your truth Avotcja.

When rains of justice turned to drought,

That was when we sought cha,

To lift your head and raise your voice,

And spit your truth Avotcja.

And there you were so sure and strong

And all who listened got cha.

For in your words rang clear the song

Of justice, true, Avotcja.

So speak your truth to power's face,

Just like your momma taught cha,

And know when push comes down to shove

We got cha back , Avotcja.

OK... here's a sort of funny verse I came up with that won't be in the final version, but I got a chuckle out of it:

And when you think we're out of rhymes,

There's always still foccacia.

So spit your truth but swallow first,

Remember that, Avotcja!

Thanks Phission. I'm glad you liked it. And yes, she is a special person. You can see that by going to avotcja.org...

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
