Free Lunch
If there ever was a free lunch
I haven't found it yet
You get but what you pay for
And you pay for all you get
Those who can will labor
And those who won't or can't
Must keep in mind the story of
The grasshopper and ant
The work is often dreary
The recompense is slim
The end, it seems, is frequently
Both premature and grim
Then Jesus takes his ten percent
And Caesar takes his share
But after that it seems as if
There's nothing really there
So we plop down on the sofa
In the darkness and the gloom
And let reality TV
Consume our living room
That mindless darkened living room
Can breed so much malaise
The answer's not less taxes
It's not a bigger raise
The blame lies not on others
Those resentments that we've felt
Arise from inability
To play the cards we're dealt
Cause when the push comes down to shove
The ladder we must climb
Is really very much about
The way we spend our time
Turn off the tube; go read a book
Go strolling in the park
Go do some volunteer work
Choose sunlight over dark
And when you've learned to play guitar
Or tutored kids to read
Or cooked those meals for older folks
Who no one else would feed
And when you've worked to make this world
Somehow a better place
Go look into the mirror and
Admire that smiling face
