    Poem Commentary

    This morning's meditation...

    Structured Verse

Is structured verse so surely dead?
Has it nothing left to say?
Have the rhyme and rhythm petered out
    Somewhere along the way?

Have feet marched off to glory's end?
    Have the syllables this day
Been recounted for the one last time
    And then been packed away?

The masters are but relics now?
Do their words hold nothing more?
Have the songs and stories sung by them
    Become just ancient lore?

No, I for one can not allow
Such a day to ever dawn,
For as surely as I still draw breath
    The rhythm will live on!

cookie, I admire your love and practice of structured form. Classic poetry is astounding and melodic. May we never forget our poetic origins. ginga

Hello, I thought that in the wake of what is happening I would visit a friend. Structured verse is like Rock and Roll... sometimes on the decline because of RandB or Hip Hop, BUT it never dies. You and I are united in this endeavor:) Just a little note, I think the tenth line sounds a bit different. I think it is because HOLD and NOTHing are both stressed words together.

Wow! Is it great to hear from you again, my friend! Actually the story with that second line is that (in each stanza) it starts with an anapest followed by two iambic feet. So it would be read like this: "So their WORDS hold NOTHing MORE?". That unusual construction is used in every verse. It adds texture to poem.... hehe

Having structures gives a writer many more options to express an idea. It will not die...it is in the soul. Nice rhythm!

as long as there is you and other poets on this site structured will always be alive great write Marie

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

    Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
