Taxi to Eternity
The April rain, in rivulets,
Runs down the window panes,
Through which I gaze in silent thought,
For little time remains.
Impressionistic willow trees,
Upon the grassy hills,
The mottled yellow crocuses,
The blurry daffodils.
I chose to leave this all behind,
This planet of my birth
To sign up on a starship
And to bid farewell to earth.
You've got to be, well, self contained
To venture into space,
Not bound by love nor sentiment,
Not bound by time nor place.
‘Cause traveling at light speed means
That time arrests it's flow.
You blink your eyes and in a flash
The eons come and go.
So if I ever make it home
All this will just be rust,
Or buried underneath the sands,
Or blown away in dust.
The deed is done, the contract signed.
The taxi comes for me.
The wait is just a little time,
Yet seems eternity.
