I Write Because

I Write Because

I don't write poetry because
I long for your approval,
To quiet my internal beast,
Or hasten love's removal,
To serve up beauty on a plate,
Or point out human flaws,
Or seek out fame or fortune.
I only write because
Morality gave way to greed
And xenophobia.
Religion turned to hatred
And homophobia.
War can never make a peace,
Nor politics find truth.
And truth? That's what we lost sometime
In our embattled youth.
Justice cannot live with hate
Or coexist with power.
And love, it seems grows fainter
With every passing hour.
I do not write to see my words
Across the page unfurled.
I write 'cause poetry alone
Can save this broken world.
I don't write poetry because
I long for your approval,
To quiet my internal beast,
Or hasten love's removal,

To serve up beauty on a plate,
Or point out human flaws,
Or seek out fame or fortune.
I only write because

Morality gave way to greed
And xenophobia.
Religion turned to hatred
And homophobia.

War can never make a peace,
Nor politics find truth.
And truth? That's what we lost sometime
In our embattled youth.

Justice cannot live with hate
Or coexist with power.
And love, it seems grows fainter
With every passing hour.

I do not write to see my words
Across the page unfurled.
I write 'cause poetry alone
Can save this broken world.

Very inspiring! I really enjoyed it and savour the sentiment. Nice, traditional form and rhyming structure which one sees less and less of (I find). Refreshing and eloquent - great job.

You have been touched by the Master Himself! If everyone took the time out to write about all of the things that ail, afflict, upset, encite, arrouse, bemuse, confuse, deter, enrage, enlighten, belittle or empower them, this world would be a much safer place. Something about getting your innermost thoughts out of your head and actually seeing them is sooo very therapeutic! Great write I am ENVIOUS!!!

Well, maybe us poets can make a difference... We just have to get people to think about these things.

So much truth lies within the beauty of these words. Poetry, yes, can save more than the world. Bravo!

I believe in poetry saving the world from anything bad too... if only everyone took the time ... hugs

Poetry speaks to the human heart, and that's exactly where the problems of this world seem to originate.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
