I Write Because
I don't write poetry because
I long for your approval,
To quiet my internal beast,
Or hasten love's removal,
To serve up beauty on a plate,
Or point out human flaws,
Or seek out fame or fortune.
I only write because
Morality gave way to greed
And xenophobia.
Religion turned to hatred
And homophobia.
War can never make a peace,
Nor politics find truth.
And truth? That's what we lost sometime
In our embattled youth.
Justice cannot live with hate
Or coexist with power.
And love, it seems grows fainter
With every passing hour.
I do not write to see my words
Across the page unfurled.
I write 'cause poetry alone
Can save this broken world.
