    After the Light has Faded

    After the light has faded,
You sit in your darkened room.
Thinking about the arc of your life.

Your love went to those who needed it.
Your heart and your money to your kids.
Your youth, your very body to your job.

Now you think about the arc of your life,

    And What if...
    And I only wish...
    And Too bad that...

    And Well at least...

By now you are truely alone.
    In this darkened room.
With only yourself to answer to.

    Was it worth it?
    Did you make a difference?

    Are you sure?

At our age we begin to think about these things but if you chakras are aligned then you are never true alone; you know yourself and that self connected to the universe. It is the reflections that lingers and at times invade our thoughts. Then it is time to meditate and reconnect to what is truth and it ain't what was; it is what is. This is thoughtful write you have presented to the world.

Thanks Olan. It was my first on OP. I don't write much free verse. With a structured piece at least I know when each word and syllable fits into the framework. It gives me something to measure against. With free verse I always feel lost. I never know when a piece is done, Therefore I am rarely satisfied with the outcome. Most of them wind up in the round bin. This one, because it was my first, got to hang around.

I feel every syllable, G. Doubt will take as prominent seat as you give him (No, it doesn't take much of an investment for a stranger to type a throw-away crack like that as part of a poem comment, but it's more than that...it's where I am). I found myself in a place where I decided what's done is done (right or wrong) and can't be changed. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but it sure suited me when I found it. It took time and practice, but it paid off, and I breathe so much easier since putting a knife through the kidney of regret. Sorry about the over-the-top description, but It ain't the kind of thing I can soft-peddle. You illuminate true elucidation, here.

In my darkened room, there is always God. In His company, I find the answer to these bedeviling second guesses. I'm still equivocating on few, but I'm confident God is patiently waiting for me to arrive at His answer. Great provocation to thought.

Answers arrive when least expected. We all share the same sentiments at one time or another. There is a balance since those that are last will come first. Great write. 10

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
