    Poem Commentary

    I got word Tuesday evening that Hung's baby arrived in far off Vietnam. They decided to name her Kiều Lan, which translates in English to "Splendid Orchid". There was a storm blowing in as I rode the Ferry to San Francisco this morning. As the boat rocked back and forth in the arms of God, I wrote this little poem to my new granddaughter. Enjoy...

    Splendid Orchid

    My Splendid Orchid do you know
    How much you mean to me,
    Although you live in Vietnam
    Across this storm tossed sea?

    I've never looked into your eyes
    Nor seen your little smile,
    Nor kissed your tiny fingers
    As I held you for a while.

    I haven't rocked you off to sleep
    Nor sung your lullaby,
    But know I love you flower girl
    And will until I die.

    Sleep well my little blossom child,
    For in all this crazy world,
    Your Grandpa's favorite flower is
    His little orchid girl.

    Reminds me of my first Thomas Ford Collection pieces written in dedication to my great-nephew Thomas Ford. She will treasure this verse years from now, long after you are gone, but not fforgotten.

    Hi kiddo.... It's great to hear from you. OP is so quiet these days. Yes, I can't wait until my next trip over there. I'm gonna spoil her rotten! hehe Work is very demanding lately. I hardly have time to sit down and think any more. But not for too much longer. I'm looking forward to retirement. The second book is coming along well. Of course you've seen most of the poems in it already. I hope you are doing well out there in the middle of the Great Plains. Here's to an early spring my friend! cookie
