Poem Commentary

A new one. Once again written on the ferry enroute to work this morning. It needs some work, but is kind of a fun read. Enjoy, my friends.

Halfway to Eternity

Death is such a dreary must,
The little box, the worms and dust,

No shows to watch, no ducks to feed,
And way too dark to even read.

Because nobody wants to die
Corporate religions vie

To win our faith (but not our laughter)
With visions of a grim hereafter.

The Baptists have their lake of fire
To keep their flock from sin most dire.

They say that's where we'll all be sent
If we don't pay our ten percent.

Because it's such an awkward sell,
(To burn so many folks in hell)

The Catholics have a different story -
They pack em off to purgatory.

What happens there?  I'd have to guess
Is audits by the IRS,

Perhaps unending root canal,
Or sharing bed with Chairman Mao.

(The point is it's preferred instead
Of fire and brimstone for a bed.)

The Buddhists think the end of life
Brings rebirth and another wife.

The latter's not so bad a deal;
The former's lacking in appeal;

At least, that is, cause in their view
Another life is just not cool.

The logic as laid down by Hesse
Is life is worse than death, I guess.

In Judiasm you must wait,
Messiah will undo your fate

And free you from your shroud and lime,
(Assuming that you're worth the time.)

But waiting for that guy to show's
A bit like waiting for Godot!

Islam has a fiery hell
With many horror tales to tell.

But unlike that of Baptist strain
This hell, Allah will slowly drain,

And send upstairs to heaven's gate
Those crispy ones who've earned that fate.

All faiths will spout these doctrines to
Coerce us to their point of view.

In lieu of listening to their rave,
I'd choose, instead, the peaceful grave.

meter and rhyme were never my thing... but I like your stuff. I'm new and I have been reading all this "I love you sooo much/You broke my heart/I can't help it/If I'm a tart!" poetry. So its nice to read the real thing. Sagittarius is interesting but I wish you would have stuck more spaceman imagery in there to keep it going... almost no one writes Sci-Fi poetry and there is just something really cool about that juxtaposition. I am a huge Hesse fan and enjoyed the nod to Siddhartha -but Durrell's Justine pandered more to the gnostic/agnostic side of me -a natural panatheist -as in ALL things are sacred instead of non-theism- atheist... most well described in the writings of Charles Frazier.

I'm not a non-theist. More of an anti-corporatetheocrat. I lean heavily toward Budhism, but retain some of the more positive values learned in my fundamentalist upbringing... hehe it's just that sometimes when I'm venting I sound like an Athiest. If you like some of the scientific poetry try "Robot Love" or perhaps "On the Point of a Pin" (which might have been subtitled "When Theology Meets String Theory") I'm glad you like my work, my friend.

Thank You, Dearie... I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm already building up a collection for the next volume. But now I'm commuting by Ferry, so I suppose I should call it "Ferry Poems" or something... And yes, this one was great fun to write. Bear in mind that I only touched on the four major CONTEMPORARY religions. In the 3 million year history of mankind, there are many other religions that had equally humorous visions of the afterlife. The point, I guess, is to scare people into your fold and keep them there while you fleece them for their tithe... A good job if you can get it!

Just what Jesus Himself taught, in the grave it is all peaceful. You are sleeping. But He also said look forward to a resurrection. That is where things get interesting: John 5:29 Harv (Of course, you could bet He was wrong about that if you choose.)

Harv, I'm not sure I believe that, yet It never hurts to hedge your bet!

Wow, John... You didn't waste any time. You almost got your comment up almost before the poem was posted! Thanks for the comment - I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
