Childhood Toys

Thomas Price played jack straws

When he was just a boy.

For Porter Hanks's his spinning top

Was his favorite toy.

Georgie liked the see-saw,

And Benjamin the hoop,

While Vernon laughed and loved to make

His kite fly in a loop.

Bobby rode his bicycle

With no hands on the bars,

And Stevie Gill liked to crash

His little metal cars.

But Thomas died of battle wounds

One crisp New England fall,

While Porter's head was blown off

By a British cannon ball.

Georgie passed at Gettysburg,

His blood spilled in the grass,

And Benjamin at Flanders,

Choked on mustard gas.

Vernon in a burning tank

Died at Normandy,

And Stevie fell the victim to

A roadside IED.

Bobby Parker bled to death

Amidst the sprouting rice.

They trusted us to guarantee

The cause is worth the price.

Oh, yes. You have shown the metamorphasis of boys to men to soldiers. It's amazing how alike our minds run. Read this and you'll know what I mean. http://piptalk.com/main/forumdisplay.cgi?action=displayarchive&number=79&topic=002416

for some reason when I check that link, I have a "Reply to Comment" show up at the end of it. Don't know why. If that happens to you, delete those words from the end and the link works.

The bare naked truths of the costs of war shine through this magnificently worded work of art. The truth of life is that if we would catch just a glimpse of the fallen as they were when children - and understand that their dreams, aspirations, loves, and possibilities fade with their dying breaths - then, and only then, could we consider the cost of freedom and democracy. Every fallen soldier was someone's child...someone's father... someone's brother, sister, or friend. Mingle the sounds of their childhood playing with the sounds of their adolescent dying, and the resulting symphony can only be played on the heart strings of those who have lost. Terrific poem, Sir. My hat's off to you. Marcus

I revisited this poem ater reading "My Brother after the War" and your comments. And, again, was moved as I was before. This powerful piece is made moreso by the fact that we celebrate our country's freedom, as well as all those who served to make her so. Thank you, too.

Richard, I served in Vietnam. It took me many years after that to "get my head together" (if, indeed, I ever did). It grieves me that so many young men didn't make it back from there... and for what? War is an ugly experience. We should not lightly ask our sons to lay their lives on the line unless we are absolutely certain that it is necessary. It seems to me that to do otherwise betrays a sacred trust.

The day we went to war in Iraq I said, This is another Vietnam. Haven't we learned anything? Apparently not. I shall go to my grave cursing that MF Bush, Cheney, Rove, etc. for getting us into that debacle. It was immoral, if not illegal, and I regard those bastards as traitors!

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
