    Poem Commentary

My New Year's Day poem - January 1, 2011. Comments are welcome...

    Sagittarius

Before we get to point five Warp
You will have heard it said
    I took an interstellar flight
    And shifted toward the red.

They'll call about the college fund,
To put the kids through school.
I'll give your new man lots of space
So you can play the fool.

You know, of course, I had to leave,
There was no way for me
To ever simply let you go,
    To ever set you free.

So when my ship makes point nine five,
    With relativity,
For every day I stay awake
    You'll age by 3.3.

And when I go to cryosleep,
We'll be at ten to one.
On wake up day, so far away,
You'll be long dead and gone.

I'll be but twenty seven then,
    Well, biologically,
On Earth a thousand years will pass,
So who knows what will be?

Please grant me one small favor dear.
    The kids will ask someday,
    So point to Sagittarius
And say "He went that way".

If you ever return..and we all hope you do...you'll be younger perhaps than your great, great, great, great, great , great, great, great, great, great, great grandson. Good write.

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
