    Poem Commentary

    Will man survive the eventual end of Earth? I guess we'll find out in another 5 billion years when the sun swells up into a red giant engulfing Mercury and Venus and boiling off the Earths seas and atmosphere. Is anybody out there taking bets?

    Requiem for Earth

     There came, at last, expansion of the Sun
    That brought to brutal end your crystal rills,
    It licked with searing flames to barren stone
    The verdant cape that carpeted your hills.

    It scoured away the monuments of men,
    Reduced to ash the unseen and the seen,
    And left no hint of atmosphere or sea
    On you who were so beautiful and green.

    Yet frozen on my interstellar flight,
    My mind retains the memories of Earth.
    I know wherever fate will set me down,
    I'll still have you, the planet of my birth.

    But yet, across expanse of time and space,
    A swollen sun will roil with storm and flare,
    But no one will remain to watch the show,
    Long since consumed, the Earth will not be there.
