    Poem Commentary

Another bus poem (written on the bus on the way to work). As usual, comments are appreciated.

    Time

In the course of time we learn to walk,
We learn to talk to laugh and sing,
    We learn ride a bicycle
We learn the joys that childhood brings.

We learn the phases of the moon,
We learn the names of stars above,
We learn how butterflies are born,
But most of all we learn of love.

In the course of time we go to school
We learn the symmetries of math,
We learn the power found in words,
We learn to follow our own path.

We learn the heat of love's first kiss,
The pride and shame of right and wrong,
We learn what friendship truly means
And what it takes to get along.

In the course of time we learn of war,
    The transience of human life,
    We learn what obligation means
And of the spiral path of strife.

    Eventually we learn to give,
To value something more than "me",
We learn lap time and nap time too,
And how to raise a family.

In the course of time we learn of work,
    Consistent and unfailing deeds,
    Reliability and worth,
And sorting out our wants and needs.

We learn as well to handle loss,
The loss of loved ones held so dear,
But also loss of face and pride
And loss of youth, and loss of fear.

In the course of time we learn of ends,
We learn what reasons might have been,
    We learn to face mortality
And long to do it all again.

In the course of time - we learn...

Time can be a marvelous teacher, and Mr. Meisenheimer the assistance of Time[ and no you do not need to pay me]. The rhythm is grand as a Chant Royale and the message is of life. I suppose that , right now, life seems as " the long and winding road". As Mr. Salassi below, I too am guilt of gluttony. Still, a powerful work.

gm cookie, A thorough representation of what one learns over the course of their life in true poetics. Loved it. ginga

You are superlative artist AND a craftsman, friend. Either alone is exceptional, together, they're transcendent. Really!

Reading this poem a second time..and a third...is gluttony on my part, but I do love a good meal, and this piece is simply sumptuous!!!

Lol... I can't tell you how fun it was writing this piece after struggling so much with "Love's Refrain"... It was like a drink of cold fresh water. It sort of restored my self confidence. I'm glad you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
