Poem Commentary

My first Ferry Poem! Yes, I moved last week, so I no longer have a 4 or 5 hour bus ride every day during which to write. As a result, my first book "Bus Poems" is in it's final stages of editing. This poem marks a new era.... "Ferry Poems". Written this morning on the Ferry enroute to San Francisco. It's still rough. As usual, comments and suggestions are welcome.

My Children

Come and meet my children
They obey me very well.
They work so hard on my behalf
It makes my old heart swell.

It isn't very easy
To keep up with all my plans:
Nine tenths of the planet's wealth
In one tenth of it's hands.

My oldest child is Hunger
And she can guarantee
That labor costs are held in check.
They almost work for free!

Poverty's the next one,
He manages cash flow,
Making sure the money goes
Where I think it should go.

My youngest child is War
He arbitrates disputes,
Wipes out the competition,
And then pillages the loot.

I'm so proud of my children
They give me all I need.
You see Hunger, Poverty and War
Are children born of Greed.

Excellently stated, my friend. I just read Reckoning by Hampton that follows this line of reasoning, well done. Olan.

If someone told me you'd been appointed the conscience of the species, G. I'd have to sit down and give thanks that someone finally got something right.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
